Zudem wolle er mit dem russischen Präsidenten Wladimir Putin telefonieren. Die US-Regierung warnte derweil mit drastischen Worten vor den Folgen einer möglichen russischen Invasion. Man glaube aber nicht, dass Präsident Putin den endgültigen Beschluss gefasst habe, die nahe der Grenze zur Ukraine zusammengezogenen Kräfte einzusetzen, sagte US-Verteidigungsminister Led Austin am Freitag im Freitag.

Deutschlands Verteidigungsministerin Christine Lambrecht (SPD) telefonierte am Freitag mit ihrem US-Kollegen Lloyd Austin. Die beiden Minister hätten betont, dass sie die Souveränität und territoriale Integrität der Ukraine unterstützen, teilte das US-Verteidigungsministerium mit. Zudem seien sich Lambrecht und Austin einig gewesen, dass Russland im Falle eines Einmarsches in die Ukraine mit schwerwiegenden Konsequenzen rechnen müsse.
