DrFormer US President Donald Trump is running for President of the House of Representatives. Fox News quoted the Republican as saying on Thursday that party representatives had asked him to take over for a “short period” if there was no solution.
He would do it if it was „necessary.” He previously made similar comments on his Truth Social platform and wrote that he wants to return to the White House after the 2024 presidential election. But he will do „whatever is necessary” to help with the selection process „in the short term” until a final decision on the position is made.
American media had previously reported that Trump was considering visiting the US Capitol building next week. The goal is to „unify” the party while searching for a suitable candidate.
Trump’s visit to Congress will have great symbolic meaning. Trump supporters violently stormed the Capitol building on January 6, 2021. The Republican had previously incited his supporters during a speech by falsely claiming that he had been denied his victory through widespread election fraud. The riots resulted in the deaths of five people. The attack on the heart of American democracy has shocked the country.
After the historic ouster of House Speaker Kevin McCarthy earlier this week, Republicans are now searching for a successor to the position. They have a slim majority in the parliamentary chamber. It is possible that there will be elections by the middle of next week at the earliest. It is unclear who can move up. Trump had already taken the initiative to run and posted a composite photo in which he could be seen holding the president’s gavel in his hand.
When voting for the top office, representatives can also nominate people who are not members of the US Congress – such as Trump. To do this, the actor would have to nominate Trump as the nominee.
However, because of the narrow Republican majority in the House, all the divided wings of Republicans must rally behind one candidate. More moderate MPs are unlikely to vote for the 77-year-old, and are therefore likely to risk re-election in a constituency he narrowly won.
