For the past six months, Russia has been trying to capture the city of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine. The fighting in the region is particularly fierce and the number of casualties is high. Now it seems that the Russian armed forces in the region have reached a dead end. According to the ISW, their progress has become increasingly slow.
Apparently, the Russian forces cannot keep up the pace of their advance in the hotly contested region of Bakhmut. This is what the US Institute for War Research (ISW) wrote in its latest update. It is still too early to judge whether the Russian offensive to take control of Bakhmut reached its climax. However, the ISW was able to determine that the Russian Armed Forces carried out fewer attacks on Bakhmut in November and December than in October. Russian military bloggers also admitted that Ukrainian forces managed to „slow down” the pace of the Russian advance in Bakhmut and nearby settlements.
Since the beginning of the war, Russia has been trying to capture the strategically important city of Bakhmut. Despite numerous attacks, Russian forces have so far failed to break through the Ukrainian defences. The ISW assumes that they also lack the necessary supply of artillery ammunition for a full-scale offensive operation. According to the British Ministry of Defense, they needed „a large number of grenades and missiles” just to maintain the line of defence.
In addition, according to the ISW, the „heavy losses of the Wagner Group” put a strain on the troop’s human capabilities. She added that the shortage of personnel and ammunition may prompt Moscow to make a „tactical or practical” halt in the Bakhmut region. And Russia’s „intense and costly push” on the city could hamper Russia’s ability to pursue long-term goals in the Donbass.

Sergey Shrivatyg, spokesman for the Eastern Ukrainian Army Group, also spoke of the heavy losses suffered by the attackers at Bakhmut.
