DrManhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has confirmed an indictment against former US President Donald Trump. Bragg’s office said Thursday night (local time) that his office had contacted Trump’s attorney to coordinate his transfer to New York to be charged.
The indictment in the case remains closed and open. More information should follow once Trump’s appearance date has been determined. Previously, several US media outlets unanimously reported on Thursday that a so-called New York grand jury voted to indict Trump in connection with hush money payments to a porn actress.
Never in US history has a former president been charged with a crime. The case concerns the payment of $130,000 (about 120,000 euros) to Stormy Daniels before the 2016 elections. The porn star, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, claims he had an affair with Trump in 2006, which he refuses.
The payment itself is not illegal. But the former president could face charges of forging commercial documents or illegal campaign financing. New York prosecutors have been investigating this issue for years. The 76-year-old candidate for presidential elections in November next year denies all allegations.
Trump sees „flagrant interference in the election”
Trump responded angrily to the indictment. In a statement, the presidential candidate described himself as a victim of a „witch hunt” by „radical left-wing democrats”. The accusation of „a completely innocent person” is „an act of blatant interference in the elections”. „Never in the history of our nation has anything like this happened,” Trump added. The charges against him in New York „backfire” on President Joe Biden. Trump’s attorney, Tacopina, said: “He committed no crime. We will vigorously fight this political persecution in court.”
Meanwhile, Trump’s son Eric Trump said on the online platform Truth Social that the accusations target a „political opponent in an election year.” Donald Trump Jr., Trump’s eldest son, also wrote on Truth Social that the government is cracking down on its „political enemies”. Trump’s supporters in the Republican Party also responded with outrage, calling the action „scandalous”.
For Donald Trump’s former attorney Michael Cohen, the former US president’s indictment is „just the beginning.” Now you have to let the indictment speak for itself, Cohen said Thursday in a statement made available to US media. „However, I take comfort in the fact that the adage is true that no one is above the law, not even a former president,” Cohen said. He stands by his statement in the case.
Cohen has since dumped his former client. According to his own statements, he paid hush money to porn actress Daniels on behalf of Trump in order to avoid hurting Trump in the presidential campaign. Trump and his lawyers waived the payment but denied any involvement with the actress.
Meanwhile, attorney Stormy Daniels said the charges against Trump are „no reason to be happy.” But truth and justice must prevail,” Clark Brewster wrote on Twitter. „No one is above the law.”
Trump himself said on March 18 that he should be arrested after three days and called on his supporters to protest. Previously, signs of a possible indictment have intensified. This raised fears among authorities in New York that riots might break out. The arrest announced by Trump did not take place.
Further investigations into other cases
The grand jury met in Manhattan in secret. At meetings of the informal committee responsible for the indictment, the team, led by Manhattan’s chief prosecutor, Alvin Bragg, presents evidence and witnesses can be cross-examined. Only on Wednesday several US media reported that the decision on the indictment will probably not be made until the end of April.
Trump isn’t just in the spotlight in the Stormy Daniels case. Investigations are underway in South Georgia regarding possible unlawful interference with the results of the 2020 presidential election.
A US private investigator is also looking into Trump’s responsibility for storming the Capitol on January 6, 2021 and taking several classified documents from the White House to Trump’s private estate Mar-a-Lago in Florida after the end of the Republican term. . However, Trump has not been charged in any of these three investigations, at least not yet.
A possible trial and conviction that could result in Republicans facing several years in prison could jeopardize his plans to run for president again politically — in terms of support from his party and the Republican base. In pure legal terms, on the other hand, according to legal experts, Trump could theoretically also stand as a convicted felon in the 2024 presidential election.
