Trump and Biden celebrate their success in the primaries on Super Tuesday

As of: March 6, 2024 at 8:57 AM

In the US primaries on Super Tuesday, former President Donald Trump prevailed almost everywhere among Republicans and President Joe Biden prevailed among Democrats. Nikki Haley had only respectable success against Trump.

In the Super Tuesday primaries, both Democratic US President Joe Biden and his Republican predecessor, Donald Trump, took a decisive step toward their party's presidential nomination.

According to expectations and partial results, Trump led in at least 13 states out of the 15 states that voted on Tuesday. It prevailed in Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, California, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Texas, Tennessee, and Virginia. Although he narrowly won Vermont, his internal party rival, Nikki Haley, achieved only a symbolic success in the end.

Trump talks about a „wonderful evening”

Trump spoke to his supporters at his private resort in Mar-a-Lago, Florida, about a „wonderful evening.” His success is unprecedented: “This is a huge success,” Trump said. In his speech, he praised himself in a familiar way and praised his work as President of the United States in the White House. At the same time, he called on his party to unite. “We have a great Republican Party with tremendous talent,” Trump said. “And we want unity, and we will have unity, and it will happen very quickly.”

Haley has not yet commented on Super Tuesday's results or whether she will continue to run for president in the coming weeks. Her surprise victory in Vermont, after a tight contest against Trump there, was only the second in a Republican primary so far. She had previously won the vote in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area just last weekend.

On Super Tuesday morning, Haley said on Fox News that although everyone wants to take her out of the race, she's not ready to drop out yet. But that was before former President Trump won clearly.

Biden wins with one exception

For Democrats, President Biden won the Super Tuesday primaries in all the states where voting took place. He won Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, California, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont and Virginia.

It was only in the small US territory of American Samoa in the South Pacific that it suffered internal party defeat. There, the 81-year-old was defeated by largely unknown candidate Jason Palmer by 40 votes to 51, the party announced there. However, only six delegate votes were cast in the district for the Democratic nominating convention.

Thanks to the successes achieved on Super Tuesday, Biden is already close to the necessary majority of delegate votes there. Against this background, he was already focusing on the dispute with Trump. Biden said in a statement that he was „determined to destroy our democracy” and take away people's basic freedoms. Trump „will do or say anything to gain power.” Biden said that the results of the primary elections that took place on Tuesday will present the American people with a clear choice, asking: “Do we continue to make progress or do we allow Donald Trump to drag us once again into the chaos, division, and darkness that is his time?” in the office?”

In the United States of America, the next president will be elected on November 5. Based on the results of previous primaries, there is a lot to be said for a repeat of the 2020 duel between Trump and Biden.

Khamenei’s advisor: Iran is open to talks with America

10:23 PM: Iran has shown itself open to direct talks with the United States, and appears ready to change its policy toward its arch enemy. The ISNA news agency quoted Kamal Sharasi, foreign policy advisor to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as saying, “The Americans consider diplomacy the best option (…). We share the same opinion and are also ready to return to negotiations.”

According to Sharasi, Iran must also be prepared to resume nuclear negotiations that were suspended by the United States. “Then we can also talk about a nuclear-free zone (in the Middle East),” the senior advisor and former foreign minister said.

Biden Advisor Sullivan: We will not abandon Israel

9:21 pm: The US government has assured Israel that it will stand behind its ally despite withholding the ammunition shipment. Biden’s security advisor, Jake Sullivan, said in an interview with ABC News that US President Joe Biden does not want to use American weapons in a major military operation in the city of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip. He added, „This does not mean that he abandons Israel or deprives it of weapons.”

Blinken: The attack on Rafah will not destroy Hamas

7:28 pm: According to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, even a major Israeli attack on the city of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip will not completely destroy the Palestinian Islamic extremist organization Hamas. Blinken told NBC on Sunday that Israel would likely inherit „an insurgency that includes many armed Hamas fighters” or leave a „vacuum” in the event of a withdrawal. Perhaps this void will be filled with “chaos” and “chaos” – and perhaps with enthusiasm.

Israel opens a new crossing into Gaza for humanitarian aid

6:35 pm: The Israeli army announced that it opened a new border crossing to bring humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip in coordination with the United States. The army says that the „West Iris” crossing is located in the northern Gaza Strip. He added that this aims to increase the number of aid transfers to the Gaza Strip, especially to the northern region. On Sunday, dozens of trucks carrying flour from the port of Ashdod passed through the crossing.

Israel: A leading member of Hamas was killed

6:23 pm: The Israeli military announced that a leading member of the Hamas terror group was killed in an airstrike in Gaza on Friday. The man belonged to one of the Hamas combat forces and was one of the Hamas fighters responsible for guarding the kidnapped Israeli soldier Noa Marciano. Marciano was kidnapped in the Gaza Strip after the terrorist attack on October 7, and was later killed there. The Israeli army recovered the body of the 19-year-old in November and returned it to Israel.

Migrants from Senegal: “Nothing works in this country”

Migrants from Senegal: “Nothing works in this country”

As of: May 12, 2024 at 2:31 p.m

The number of people from West Africa heading to Europe has increased significantly. Not only do they want to escape poverty, they also want to feel a lack of prospects.

Written by Kay Costner, Ard Rabat

Sheikh Ndaw, 24, just wants to leave. Although the young mechanic has a job, nothing can stop him in Senegal: “I have my job, I work every day, but nothing works.” “Nothing works in this country.” His declared goal is Europe. And he already knows how to get there: by boat. From the point of view of the young Senegalese man, there is no other way out: “The only option is to go there illegally. Because I cannot afford the legal way, the plane.”

This makes the young man a very typical case for his generation. At least this is what migration researcher Professor Ali Tandian of Gaston Berger University in Saint Louis in northern Senegal sees. It is naive to think that most people leave their country in search of work, says Tandiyan.

Poverty is by no means the only reason

It’s more complicated, and the reasons are more complex: „Research shows us that those who migrate are not as poor as you think,” Tandiyan explains. “They are people who work. But they work for others so that the profits do not come back to them. Or they are people who are forced to do multiple jobs.”

Tandiyan talks about the so-called “working poor.” Indeed, statistics indicate that the poorest of the poor in Africa do not have the strength or means to undertake the long, often life-threatening journey – let alone pay the smugglers.

So it’s the people with the least limited resources who get going. The data also shows that the number of migrants leaving their homes within Africa is several times higher than the number heading to Europe in often small wooden fishing boats.

The number of immigrants is increasing rapidly

However, 13,000 people arrived in the Canary Islands via the so-called North Atlantic Route in the first three months of this year, five times the number of people the previous year. Many of them are from Senegal.

Most are driven by desperation — or by dreaming of a better future in their heads, says migration expert Tandiyan. “With all the illusions, the heroism of immigration and the glorification of travel for immigrants, people think it’s possible to find their way around once you’re gone.”

When Tandean talks about “delusions” and “glorification,” he is referring to a social media phenomenon that has been giving Europeans headaches for years: young immigrants and influencers in North Africa have repeatedly filmed themselves in TikTok photos and videos, smiling and smiling completely. On their perilous journeys in small boats across the Mediterranean.

They stood relaxed in front of their smartphone cameras and acted as if it was a harmless fun ride with a glorious future waiting beyond the horizon. And not about a flight that kills thousands every year.

Many films that appeared years ago have now been deleted. But this does not solve the problem. In West Africa too, these posts, often shared hundreds of thousands of times, may still haunt the minds of many young people.

Will the new government change anything?

Regarding Senegal’s youth, aspirants took power at the beginning of April: “I often tell young people: the solution is not to ride boats.” Politician Ousmane Sonko addressed his young countrymen with these words in 2019. Sonko is well respected, especially among young Senegalese, and served as prime minister for a few weeks after his party colleague Diomai Fay won the presidential election in a landslide.

You now have the opportunity to make a difference. The main tasks they set for themselves are: job creation; Improving the conditions of rural residents and fishermen; Curb inflation.

„Immigration is not yet on our politicians’ agenda,” criticizes Tandiyan. Senegal’s newly elected government, celebrated by many young people, now has the opportunity to change that. The big question is whether she will.

Sheikh Ndaw, 24, doesn’t want to wait for an answer. He is ready to risk his life and leave Senegal by boat to Europe.

WABC radio in New York fired Giuliani, who is close to Trump. He is said to have repeatedly spread lies about the 2020 US election.

WASHINGTON — Rudy Giuliani is no longer allowed to speak on conservative radio station WABC in New York. The lawyer and former mayor of New York, who is close to Donald Trump, has repeatedly spoken of Joe Biden’s victory being rigged in the 2020 US election. There is no evidence of that, says John Catsimatidis, owner of WABC Radio – and draws conclusions.

We warned him once. We warned him twice.” The New York Times. Giuliani refused to avoid the topic of the 2020 US elections and thus had no choice but to suspend him. “Look, I like the guy as a person, but you can’t do that.”

Giuliani suspects censorship because he is not allowed to talk about election fraud on the radio

Meanwhile, Giuliani feels his freedom of expression is being restricted, so he spread the word about the 2020 US presidential election. He also urged his followers to contact the radio station and ask if they support freedom of expression.

Giuliani and other Trump supporters spoke out about censorship after the incident. For example, right-wing politician and Trump adviser Steve Bannon accused the radio station, which also broadcasts on Channel X, of stabbing the entire MAGA (Make America Great Again) program in the back. For radio chief Catsimatidis, there seems to be no going back on his decision. Question for guardianWhen asked if he could envision working with Giuliani in the future, he said no.

Giuliani served as mayor of New York from January 1994 until the end of December 2001, and was one of the Republican Party’s candidates to succeed US President George W. Bush. After Trump’s defeat by Biden in the 2020 US elections, the lawyer became a central figure in Trump’s attempts to overturn the election result.

Giuliani has repeatedly publicly defended the theory that the election was tampered with, and was subsequently ordered by a US court to pay $148 million.
