BAn Egyptian soldier was killed in an exchange of fire between Israeli and Egyptian forces near the border with the Gaza Strip. This was announced by the Egyptian army spokesman, today, Monday. This is the first publicly known death among the Egyptian army since the start of the Gaza war approximately eight months ago. The Israeli army confirmed that an exchange of fire had taken place. The Israeli army said that the incident was being investigated and talks were being held with the neighboring country. But the army did not provide further details.
The Israeli news website Ynet reported, citing military sources, that Egyptian soldiers opened fire. It was not initially possible to independently verify the information. According to the report, other soldiers from the neighboring country were injured in the ensuing firefight. However, an Egyptian government official told the Al-Arabi news website that Israeli forces fired first.
The situation on the border has worsened recently following the expansion of the Israeli military operation in Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip. The army says it wants to destroy the Hamas Islamist brigades there. Israeli forces advanced there three weeks ago and took control of the Rafah border crossing on the Palestinian side, as well as the border strip between Egypt and Gaza.
At the beginning of the war in October, there was an incident in which Israel said it accidentally bombed an Egyptian military site near the Kerem Shalom border crossing. According to the Egyptian army, a number of Egyptian border guards were slightly injured. The Israeli army apologized for the incident. Before the war began, there were several deadly attacks launched by armed groups on the borders of the two countries.
Egypt and Israel signed a peace treaty in 1979 after several wars. For a long time, the Arab Republic was, along with Jordan, the only Arab country to officially recognize Israel. For both Israel and Egypt, the peace treaty actually means a measure of stability in a region often plagued by conflict.
Since the beginning of the Gaza war, peace between the two countries, which was previously described as “cold,” has faced a difficult test. Mutual blame has now clouded the relationship in the first place.
The Gaza War broke out as a result of a terrorist attack carried out by the Islamist movement Hamas in the Israeli border area on October 7. More than 1,200 people were killed and more than 250 hostages were taken in the Gaza Strip. According to the Hamas-controlled health authority, more than 36,000 people were killed in the Israeli attack on the Gaza Strip.
