Charles can fix kings

Prince Charles once said he wanted to make things better rather than give them medals. There is much to suggest that, as king, he aimed for a different style of government than that of his mother, Elizabeth II. He will likely take a political stand – and dismiss the royals.

The queen is dead, long live the king! This saying also applies to the British monarchy, because there should be no vacancies on the throne. Charles became king at the age of 73. Before that, no one had to wait for the throne as long as he did. The new king’s first task is to preside over his mother’s memorial service for nine days. According to a report by The Guardian, following his announcement, he will first embark on a tour of four parts of the United Kingdom – England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland – before returning to London.

Little is known about how Charles would serve in the position. There is speculation that he wants to get more involved in politics – although this is not the plan in the British monarchy. In any case, the issue of climate change is very important to him. Modernizing the royal family should be on his agenda. According to media reports, he wanted to reduce the number of active members. There has also been speculation about ceding Buckingham Palace as a permanent residence.

Does it become the conscience of the nation? An organic farmer always gives his opinion on political issues? Those close to him once said that Charles felt the prospect of the throne was a „prison”. He didn’t want to give up medals in his life, but he wanted to tackle problems. He once said, „For as long as I can remember, I’ve had an extraordinary feeling of wanting to recover and wanting to make things better.”

Unlike Queen Elizabeth II, Charles never hesitated to take a stand. He fought against climate change, halted controversial construction projects and helped impoverished youth. In Notes – also called the Black Spider’s Diary because of his written handwriting – the heir to the throne tried to influence members of the government and got into trouble with it. As king, observers used to fear that he could divide the nation by his views and influence.

During Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit in London, he visibly walked away from the banquet at Buckingham Palace. This was interpreted as a protest against human rights violations in the country. The British were especially accused of the way he treated his first wife, Diana, the Queen of Hearts. Shortly after the courtship, the couple’s response to the question if they were in love caused them to frown: I exploded with „Yes, of course!” He said, „Whatever the meaning of love.”

After the wedding, the beautiful Diana immaculately cheated with his childhood sweetheart Camilla Parker Bowles, who was ridiculed by some British media as a Rottweiler. The War of the Roses has begun. When tape recordings revealed that Charles wanted to be reborn as Camilla plug, many Britons believed that the future King Charles would be unimaginable.

In Brexit, he played the role of mediator

In 1996 the couple divorced. Just a year later, Diana died in a car accident in Paris. In 2005, Charles married Camilla. The two are gaining respect again – very slowly but surely – through their serious behavior and a lot of diligence. The heir to the throne represented his mother on countless dates, traveled across Europe as an ambassador to please European partners troubled by Brexit and was closer to the people than ever before.

Especially, the couple goes hiking and fishing, far from the attractive world. Charles’ reputation as a spoiled loner who talks to flowers never sank. Analyzes of dreams, spiritually moving experiences in the Kalahari Desert, his preoccupation with Islamic mysticism – that might sound a little dubious. Sally Biddle Smith describes him in her autobiography as „hopelessly skinny” and intolerant of dissenting opinions, but also as a free spirit with an extraordinary aesthetic sense. American journalist Katherine Meyer paints in her book a portrait of a prominent female entrepreneur who has provoked much envy and resentment.

In short: a paradoxical character. Those around him suspected that the reasons were his difficult relationship with his parents and his upbringing. Prince Charles complained that his mother did not have enough time for him and his three siblings. Often sick, not quite athletic and afraid of horses – the Queen is said to have been considered the oldest of late. But as they got older, they learned to appreciate each other. In 2017, the BBC’s King Charles III speculated what might happen if the Queen dies.

The content seemed strange: the new king refused to sign a law restricting press freedom. This led to a constitutional crisis and nationwide protests. Then the movie Charles ordered a tank in front of Buckingham Palace. So now fantasy on TV. Charles had plenty of time to think about his role. He is heir to the throne since February 6, 1952. He was three years old when his mother became queen and a reign began. The monarch simply lacks the age at which he should appropriately tread.
