She was only 25 years old and still left big shoes to fill. Ukrainian paramedic Irina Chubush, who was famous for her commitment and media appearances, was killed in a Russian attack in the Kharkiv region in northeastern Ukraine.
Even before the fatal attack, Chubuk, whose nickname was Chika, wrote a farewell letter, which her brother has now published. “I am now filled with emptiness,” her brother wrote on Instagram. Chubbuck wrote the lines more than a year ago, she writes—apparently knowing she could die in the war at any time: “It’s 7:19 p.m., Saturday, April 8, 2023, and we’re working with the 5th Team of the 80th Reconnaissance Brigade. Aerosmith’s „Dream On” played in the background and I decided there were plenty of chances to die this year so we could at least find someone to write a suicide note to.
Chubuch then spoke in a thoughtful tone: She described it as sad that “we live so weakly, so dependent on public approval of life, that only death allows us to live in absolute freedom.” The paramedic continues: “But the problem is that life is over, and this freedom no longer has any meaning.” Today it doesn’t matter what anyone says about her or her text. „Whether you like these sentences or not, in the end I don’t care about other people’s opinions. I’m dead.”

The young woman continues to say that freedom is the highest value. “All these almost 25 years have often passed in complexes and fears. The last ten years of her life were marked by war. She has been a volunteer with the Knights Hospitaller since 2014, when pro-Russian militias began the war in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine with Russia’s support. She also worked with children and directed a film about children growing up in the war-torn Donetsk and Luhansk regions. After the full Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, she signed up as a volunteer and worked permanently as a medic in the war zone.
