“Unprepared for reality”: Weber sees the problem of the European Union in the “Sauvage” incident

Weber sees the EU problem in ‘Sofagate’ incident

After the diplomatic failure in Ankara, the president of the European People’s Party (EPP) Weber strongly criticized the President of the European Union Commission von der Leyen and the President of the Council Michel: One expects unity from senior politicians, and especially towards autocrats. But on foreign policy, the EU has to do some catch-up.

The European Christian Social Union politician, Manfred Weber, criticized the appearance of the European Union leaders on their recent visit to Turkey. This is another warning sign that the EU’s foreign policy is not ready to face the hard realities, the EPP leader said after a meeting of leaders of EU parliaments.

Weber added that unity is expected from the top politicians representing the European Union in the world. “Especially when you are dealing with dictators and dictators – politicians who fuel conflict rather than compromise – the European Union should appear strong and united in all circumstances.”

European Union Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Council President Charles Michel visited Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan last week and promised him closer cooperation. Excitement over the seating arrangement prevailed at the meeting: Erdoan only offered Michel a chair next to him, and von der Leyen was forced to sit on a sofa to the side and looked deluded. Michel and von der Leyen presented a report to the summit of the European Union Parliament on Tuesday.

Council Chairman Michel is under supervision?

Michel has been criticized for having accepted the seating arrangement requirements during public appearances and has not advocated equal treatment by der Leyens. According to the European Union Commission, Michel von der Leyen has now made clear that it will not allow such a situation again. Michel expressed his regret.

Leader of the left-wing parliamentary group Martin Shirdiwan said the incident in Ankara casts doubt on Michel’s suitability for his position as speaker of the assembly. “Michel is actually trying me. In terms of foreign policy, he let Erdogan pull himself out.”
